Black Letter Law
In 2006, a few months after BLD was launched, Debo Nwauzu, BLD founder, approached Anthony Robinson, the Legal Director of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), seeking his support for a publication to showcase the contributions of ethnic minorities in the legal profession in the UK. The CRE agreed, but the task was not as easy as first thought! There was simply no record of such contributions and neither the Bar Council of England and Wales, nor the Law Society of England and Wales were able to help. Nevertheless, the Black Letter Law 2006, a 21-page booklet was published and launched on 5 October 2006 at the Black History Month Event, sponsored by Clifford Chance.
Debo Nwauzu edited the 164-page Black Letter Law 2007, relying on advertising in the publication. The 2008 edition was a hefty 284 pages with 13 sections and the 2009 edition is a 300-page publication! We remain committed to making this an annual publication as part of our aim to highlight and promote diversity in law by showcasing the wealth of talent and the contributions made by ethnic minorities to the profession. Black Letter Law 2007 was a comprehensive revision of the design, layout and content of the 2006 publication and the 2008 and 2009 editions are even brighter, bigger and better! Organisations such as DLA Piper, the Law Society, Birmingham City Council, Allen & Overy, Slaughter & May, Clifford Chance, Pinsent Masons, White & Case and Shoosmiths, who came on board as advertisers in the publication, have made this possible.
