WELCOME TO BLD's NEWSLETTER

Welcome to our May 2007 Newsletter.

We are delighted to welcome Barclays Bank, a FTSE 100 company and one of the world's largest banks as both our sponsor and advertiser, the first corporate team to do so. We are also delighted to welcome Birmingham City Council, the UK's largest local government and Devonshires solicitors as our new advertisers.

We were one of the sponsors of the Minority Lawyers Conference last Saturday, the 28th April 2007. The atmosphere was very passionate during the main plenary chaired by Sailesh Mehta as the Carter reform was condemened. The keynote speech, "Making a Difference" was made by Mr Justice Albie Sachs of South Africa who also showed the video of the changes in the South African courts. There were various workshops including one on Judicial Appointments which included Mrs Justice Dobbs as a panellist. Panellists on other workshops included previous BLD Lawyers of the Month, Imran Khan (Anti-terror legislation), Kim Hollis QC (Personal and Career Development) and Mirza Ahmad (In-House Counsel).

We are a Media Partner of The Lawyer Diversity Conference on the 16-17th May (see below further - What is Going On in April/May 2007) and a Cooperating Entity at the American Bar Association (ABA) International Conference taking place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London from the 3rd - 6th October 2007.

On the 5th July 2007 BLD and the Association of Women Solicitors (AWS) are holding an event asking Is Netwoking an Art or a Science? You will find out why you should do it, how to do it and have the opportunity to speed network. The event is sponsored by the Magic Circle law firm, Slaughter and May. Also read more about the new chair of the AWS in our new In Focus feature below.

Another reminder that we are planning a much revised Black Letter Law publication that will include black minority ethnic (BME) judges, Queen's Counsels, partners in the top 100 UK law firms, partners in the top US and European law firms in the UK, Professors of Law, Heads of Law/Directors of Law in local government and the public sector and general counsels in commerce and industry. Thank you to all those who have already responded. Please do send us information if you qualify or know of others who are eligible by sending information by email to info@onlinebld.com. Where you can, please provide a biography that includes: the name, the current/most recent professional status/role, notable appointments, honours, awards etc to date (current and previous) and a photograph in Jpeg, ideally 300dpi resolution.
